Business Case Analysis
Whether installing a new network, an
upgrade or an addition to an existing network, a business case
must be established. Even if the justification is obvious you
need to ask yourself some questions. What is the direct benefit
to the customer? How will your users/systems offer the benefit?
There are issues related to required tools, access to resources,
system compatibility, performance requirements, availability,
disaster recovery and ROI that need to be resolved.
Assessment
It’s a comforting feeling having a well documented
network knowing the components, detailed traffic information
and how the network is performing compared to maximum capacity.
It also greatly enhances the ability to troubleshoot problems
and gives you a benchmark for future planning. An assessment
includes a network discovery, LAN and WAN traffic analysis and
reports, Network Operating System analysis, capacity planning
and business continuity. From the documentation generated, recommendations
can be made for improvement and optimization.
Convergence
Over the last 25 years, the convergence of multiple
technologies such as voice, data and video on a given network
has had some false starts. This is especially true of voice
and data. Now with the implementation of IP technologies and
the
merging of the IT and Telecommunications departments at most
companies, the stage is set for success. There are still 4
main areas to address. What is the best implementation of the
converged
technology, is it compatible with the network, does the network
have the capacity and what is the business continuity strategy?
Design
This is where it all comes together. The Business Case
Analysis, Assessment and Convergence all contribute to generating
a successful design. The design criteria established by these
three processes must be met while fitting within the budget guidelines.
It also includes selecting the proper hardware, software, carrier
services and the right vendors for the project.
Project Management
Managing projects in the enterprise networking
world can appear daunting. It requires a defined Scope of Work,
a set of reasonable goals, good communications, technical expertise
in a variety of disciplines and the ability to adapt. A well
run project is very rewarding. A poorly run project can guarantee
failure.
Security
Having a secure network requires a multi-pronged
approach. Threats can be from outside the network, inside and
to the IT facility itself. An assessment must be made based on
your business case and your vulnerabilities followed by systems
put in place to give you a secure network. To ensure ongoing
security, an audit should be performed periodically to maintain
your defense against threats.
